Bout of Books: Day 1 Update

Bout of Books  So, did I get as far as I wanted to in reading yesterday? No, but I don't think I did too bad. Yesterday, I had a few errands to run, made dinner and then worked out. As today it will be very warm here, I plan on staying inside, until at least the evening, so plenty of time for reading! Here was my progress yesterday:

Monday:

I read 100 pages of the Drop and am about halfway through right now. I plan on reading that the most today. I started reading Walden and only on page 12 so far, different than what I thought it was going for starting the beginning.

Are you participating in the challenge? Even if your not, what books are you currently reading or have finished lately? I hope they have been good ones!

The number that was picked for this spin was number 1, so I will be reading Walden and Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau by July 7th since my book only has 260 pages. I plan on having it read by then, but might hold off posting a review as quite a few people wait until July 7th.

Minding Molly Book Review

Product DetailsI received this book from Bethany House for free for my honest review. I have previously never read any books by Leslie Gould. The book Minding Molly is actually the third book in the Courtships of Lancaster County series, the book can be read as a stand along novel, although I guess some of the characters from the previous books are in this one as well. We find that Molly Zook is a young Amish woman has her whole life planned out, but lately it hasn't been going the way she wants. After the death of her father, she is trying to save the family farm, looking after her sick mother and be responsible for her sister as well. However, not all of the family members have the same views on whither or not to save the farm. Those that want to save the farm think it should be done in different ways, such as Molly's mother believing the only way would be if her daughter married Mervin Mosier the next door Amish man. Everyone deals with grief in their own way, and that brings about additional issues. An out of state Amish man named Leon is currently working with Molly's friend Hannah's family, are things as they appear though? With this many people involved feelings start to get in the way as to who has feelings for each other, misunderstandings ensue, and some who believed former loves were lost may in fact not be. Is new love to be found? Does Hannah like Leon, Leon like Hannah, Mervin like Hannah or Molly, etc. Will the farm be saved?  Will Molly's mother get well? Will Leon stay in Lancaster? Who is Leon's love? Overall I liked this book, it showed a wide variety of emotions for several different issues such as death, love, sibling relationships, and that we all react to things in our own way. If you are looking for a light read, or a somewhat complex book with quite a bit of action I highly recommend. I am going to read the rest of the books in this series. I rank this book 4 out of 5.

"A Walk in the Woods" review

Product DetailsThis book was chosen by a member of the book club that I belong to for us to read in Jan, and I am just now writing my book review. I had never read this book or known anyone who had, but it did sound intriguing to me. I like nature or walking on country roads, and the adventure of camping out in the woods, although I would probably never be so couregeous as to decide it would be a good idea to walk on the trail of the Appalachian mountains. This just happens to be what the author Bill Bryson does in this book, along with bringing a old time friend Stephen Katz, who he hasn't kept in touch with for several years. Does this sound like a disaster waiting to happen? Yes, especially when Bryson decides not to bring certain food because he does not like it. Unbeknownst to the him, Katz dumps some supplies along the trail because of the heavy load of it, this only occurs though after he decided to walk ahead and lost site of Katz (who couldn't keep up). Previously, they had both hiked around Europe, so I would have thought they would know no matter what do not get rid of supplies, especially those that are essential to survival. I did think that Bill Bryson in his book anyways, comes off as being a jerk in that he automatically it seems judges other people without knowing them. Putting that aside the stories of the other hikers and the history of the Appalachian mountains was very interesting. The second part of the book isn't as good though. Overall I give this book a 4 out of 5.
